so today my best friend tells me we gotta move his christmas tree to a farm compost he knows of near his home. we tie the tree to the top of his mazda 3 and take the terrifying trip a few miles down the road and turn onto a muddy dirt road.
We unload the tree, through the mud and the snow and bitched and moaned, but afterwards i said, hey give me your keys
hes never shy to give them up, so i climb in to the autotradic shitbox and set off.
thats when i find myself in a FWD car on a muddy twisty path..
I say, half jokingly "I just want to mash it and run it like a rally course here"
he simply replied "Go for it"
of course, i am 17, i am an idiot.. but not too much of an idiot, so i just get on it a bit
OH MY GOD HAS THAT THING NEVER FELT SO GOOD!!
It danced on the dirt a little bit, but not so much to really freak me out, in fact, i wasnt freaked at all
annnnyyyy way, now i want to build a rally car..
Seeing that 3 all coated in mud from the wheels to the roof, it was amazing
so, my very far fetched stupid plan at the moment (and has been for some time)
I borrowed some racing beat lowering springs and stock shocks for my FC from my uncle.. every so often i might slip them back on and take my car out to the pine barons for some off roading RWD fun
all the while, if i can spread the bug to my friend, i found some coilovers for the mazda 3 set up for rally. we could, over time, build him, or us, an actual rally car
But first steps first, gotta get my car done and get out there together, we can run our stock suspensioned cars out there until something goes horribly wrong and we reassess the situation from there lol
What say you oppo? will we both die in fiery mazda deaths, or reap great benefits and go on to be very successful rally racers?

I tried to make my wagon into a rallycar. It was fun racing up and down sandy roads. But too much opposite lock makes the steering pumps in these Volvos go boom. Ended my RallyX dreams pretty early.
You're not an idiot. Rallying is fun. I hope you are able to make something of it.

Depends on your definition of "successful." If you mean reaching the point where you race rally cars for a job, then no. If you mean reaching the point where you're making money rally racing, even if it's only $100, then no. If you mean reaching the point where you're not losing at least $100 per race, then still probably no. If by successful you mean going fast, getting sideways, and having waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fun than should be legal, then yes!
Mazdas are a good platform. The Speed3 has won the national title in the states, and RX7's have been rocking the stages for decades. That being said, buying a car (or at least something like a rolling chassis) is cheaper and much less of a headache than building one from scratch, mainly because of logbooks. All rally cars need to have a logbook that stays with the vehicle and chronicles the state of the vehicle. If the car is crashed, for example, the accident is noted in the logbook so at the next event the techs can ensure it was fixed properly. To get one of these logbooks you need to bring the car to one of about a half dozen scrutineers somewhere in the country, prior to the rally. For this reason it's a hell of a lot easier to buy a car/shell that already has a logbook.

I'll make sure to use that method/gif next time.

Yea i just recently learned about the log book stuff.. maybe we will buy something like a 3 (or i always thought of an early 2000s nissan sentra ser) i we really like it.. becoming successful isnt exactly my plan, just having fun really.. but of course, actual racing would be the most fun of all lol
